Here is a selection of lights to consider this winter.<\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Be seen<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re cycling well-lit urban roads, you only need blinkers \u2013 so I can\u2019t recommend <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wiggle.co.uk\/knog-light-blinder-mini-dot-twinpack\/?lang=en&amp;curr=GBP&amp;dest=1&amp;sku=100314224&amp;kpid=100314224&amp;utm_source=google&amp;utm_term=&amp;utm_campaign=Shopping+-+All+Products&amp;utm_medium=base&amp;utm_content=mckv|sBFpSDWLK_dc|mcrid|295269794859|mkw||mmt||mrd|100314224uk|mslid||&amp;mkwid=sBFpSDWLK_dc&amp;pcrid=295269794859&amp;prd=100314224uk&amp;pgrid=64996676331&amp;ptaid=pla-522612204365\">Knog blinders<\/a> for both front and rear enough. They\u2019re great value for money and the LEDs are bright enough that cars can see you from a distance, and they\u2019re USB rechargeable. But Knog have found room for improvement.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-controller-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"embed-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Knog Plus Light\" data-src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/262937314?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>I always felt the weak link in Knog lights were the elasticated straps. They worked well until they broke with all the repeated pulling on and off the frame. This new magnetic system is clearly designed to bypass this fault, and improve the convenience which, if you own Knogs, you\u2019ll know is quite an achievement.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Light the way<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>I recently rediscovered the value of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cateye.com\/intl\/\">Cateyes<\/a> on holiday in rural Vermont. Street lighting is not a given thing in comparison to my home in England, so I quickly learned to appreciate the ability to see where I was going on roads that suffer the extremities of New England weather.<\/p>\n<lite-youtube videoid=5toVhjc7YUQ params=\"enablejsapi=1\" style=\"background-image: url('https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi_webp\/5toVhjc7YUQ\/maxresdefault.webp');\"><\/lite-youtube>\n<p>The Cateye Volt 6000 is capable of outshining regular car headlights at up to 6000 lumens, but even at lower settings, it\u2019s going to show you potholes or tree roots at enough distance for you to be prepared. Just be considerate of oncoming traffic and be prepared to dip them.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Get smart<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/seesense.cc\/collections\/shop\">See.Sense<\/a> are lights so smart, they\u2019ve been displayed at the London Design Museum and are endorsed by British Cycling. The Northern Ireland company that produced them is also smart \u2013 in Manchester UK they reduced the price from \u00a379.99 to \u00a310 for trial participants to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2LiS3tGTRCo\">help map the city<\/a>.<\/p>\n<lite-youtube videoid=t1H7p3mwZ-g params=\"enablejsapi=1\" style=\"background-image: url('https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi_webp\/t1H7p3mwZ-g\/maxresdefault.webp');\"><\/lite-youtube>\n<p>Smart lights can figure out how fast you\u2019re going and adjust their brightness and blink pattern accordingly. They adjust to light levels, and even modulate their output based on the type of terrain you\u2019re travelling on. They\u2019re even waterproof to a 1-metre column \u2013 useful for night-time tri-athletes I guess.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Customise your spokes and forks<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>There\u2019s nothing wrong with a bit of bling and customisation when you want to be seen. Just make sure you understand your country\u2019s laws when it comes to lights \u2013 in Germany, for example, <a href=\"http:\/\/bicyclegermany.com\/german_bicycle_laws.html\">your front light mustn\u2019t blink<\/a>. I quite like the growing trend for fork lights on both MTBs and roadies.<\/p>\n<lite-youtube videoid=AZfycH_q-9g params=\"enablejsapi=1\" style=\"background-image: url('https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi_webp\/AZfycH_q-9g\/maxresdefault.webp');\"><\/lite-youtube>\n<p>You can really bump up your sideways visibility with a set of spoke lights and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monkeylectric.com\/\">MonkeyLectric<\/a> are the leaders in this field. As we head into winter, it\u2019s reassuring to know that they\u2019ve tested their hardware in liquid nitrogen, down to -321\u00b0F.
