Sounds good, but what if you\u2019d rather ride your bike? Which way of keeping healthy is more effective? Let\u2019s take a closer look.<\/strong><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Walking takes up more time<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Walking 10,000 steps would transport the average person about 8 km (5 mi). If we consider the average speed of walking, 5 km\/h (3 mph), then it would take roughly 1 hour and 36 minutes to complete the daily amount of steps.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Cycling burns more calories<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The average walking speed of 5 km\/h (3 mph) makes the average person burn approximately 232 kcal per hour. So the whole distance of 8 km, or 10,000 steps, will make you burn about 371 kcal in total. Cycling at a moderate speed of 20 km\/h (12 mph) burns approximately 563 kcal per hour. And the difference is even bigger when we increase the intensity. A fast walking speed of 6.5 km\/h (4 mph) burns 352 kcal per hour, while a fast cycling speed of 30 km\/h (19 mph) burns 844 kcal per hour.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_181651\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-181651\" style=\"width: 1366px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-181651\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2021\/02\/Women-peloton-UCI-World-Championships-profimedia-0388867067-CVR.jpg\" alt=\"UCI Road World Championships\" width=\"1366\" height=\"600\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-181651\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cycling burns more calories and is better for obesity prevention. \u00a9 Profimedia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Cycling is better for obesity prevention<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Researchers from London investigated the relationship between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2020\/11\/13\/surprising-things-i-learnt-through-bike-commuting-this-year\/\">various commuting methods<\/a> and obesity risk. Data from 150,000 participants revealed that both walking and cycling showed better results than taking a car or public transport. Walking was associated with significantly reduced BMI and body fat, but to a lesser extent than cycling. The average study participant who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2020\/07\/21\/9-tips-thatll-make-you-ready-for-cycling-to-work\/\">cycled to work<\/a> would weigh about 5 kg less than a similar person commuting by car.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Walking doesn\u2019t require any equipment<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>These numbers don\u2019t mean much if you don\u2019t do the exercise in question, and walking has the upper hand here. Anyone can go for a walk under almost any circumstances. Cycling is more time-efficient, burns more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2018\/05\/04\/burning-calories-while-helping-the-environment-is-the-new-craze\/\">calories,<\/a> and is better at keeping you fit and slim. And the \u201cdisadvantage\u201d of having to own and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2021\/01\/15\/bike-maintenance-tutorials-for-beginners\/\">maintain a bike<\/a> is probably something you enjoy anyway.
