{"id":149179,"date":"2017-05-18T13:50:46","date_gmt":"2017-05-18T13:50:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/?p=149179"},"modified":"2017-05-18T13:50:46","modified_gmt":"2017-05-18T13:50:46","slug":"giro-ditalias-11th-stage-spectacular-start-finish","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2017\/05\/18\/giro-ditalias-11th-stage-spectacular-start-finish\/","title":{"rendered":"Giro d\u2019Italia\u2019s 11th Stage Was Spectacular from Start to Finish"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Although Sunweb team\u2019s champ Tom Dumoulin managed to maintain both the pink jersey and his overall lead of the Giro, despite countless attacks by Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) and Thibaut Pinot (FDJ), the limelight belonged to Omar Fraile (Dimension Data). It\u2019s his very first Grand Tour victory and a well-deserved one. A large and somewhat frantic 26-person breakaway formed very early into the 161km-long stage from Firenze to Bagno di Romagna and threatened to shove Dumoulin off his top spot, so his Sunweb Team had to work hand in hand to keep him there. As the breakaway begin to splinter, the race course was the witness to many aggressive attacks.<\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>One of the greatest ones belonged to Team Sky\u2019s Mikel Landa and the aforementioned Fraile just after just 48km into the race. For a moment, the duo had an advantage of more than two minutes, but they were gradually pulled back into the scattered peloton near the base of the final climb with only 40 km remaining. When that happened, Landa was dropped immediately, unable to keep up, but Fraile did a perfect job of settling back in to the break before making a well-timed move on the final climb to chase down Pierre Rolland (Cannondale-Drapac).<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-controller-wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"it\" dir=\"ltr\">La fuga sugli Appennini premia <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OmarFraile?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@OmarFraile<\/a>! On the final descent, he was joined by Rui Costa (UAE Team Emirates) and then Tanel Kangert (Astana), the stage came down to a four-man sprint, with Friale proving forcing his legs to do their best and crossing the finish line as the first. Fraile\u2019s victory was the first Dimension Data\u2019s one at the Giro d\u2019Italia.<\/p>\n<p>The 11th stage also saw some hopes shattered as it seems that Geraint Thomas (Team Sky) was looking to gradually worm his way back to a high placing in GC over the next two weeks but his crash on Sunday and his efforts at 10th stage apparently got the best of him.
