Let\u2019s have a look at how that money\u2019s spent.<\/strong><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><strong>President\u00a0Walk, Washington DC<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>At his inauguration as President of the United States of America, Trump walked down a cycle path \u2013 the reason being that the path is slapped bang in the centre of one of Washington DC\u2019s busiest streets.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2017\/02\/Cycling-Penn-Ave.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-146797\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2017\/02\/Cycling-Penn-Ave.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"937\" height=\"528\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With fast moving traffic either side of you, getting on and off the cycle path is the most dangerous part of your day.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Marseille, France<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Parking is at a premium in Marseille, and the town planners thought that converting existing parking spaces to cycle paths would solve the problem. No, bicycle path.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Avenida Icaria, Barcelona<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>As the world laughs at America\u2019s cycle lane problem, it\u2019s worth remembering that the Spanish are guilty of exporting their worst ideas to America. The lane from Marina Street to Avenida Icaria is the perfect example.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2017\/02\/3331313.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-146800\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2017\/02\/3331313.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"476\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Just like Trump Walk, cyclists find themselves penned in on both sides by fast moving motor traffic with nothing but a painted line to separate them from the risk of collision. Have fun getting on and off this cycle lane.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Stevenage, United Kingdom<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Probably one of the greatest tragedies in cycling infrastructure is the entire town of Stevenage. A new town just north of London, Stevenage was invested in heavily to create a Utopian town in the same manner as Bracknell further west of London.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2017\/02\/90977097.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-146801\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2017\/02\/90977097.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Where Bracknell\u2019s segregated cycle paths are loved and used, Stevenage\u2019s feel more like a ghost town and are in much need of love. What Copenhagen, Amsterdam, and Utrecht would give to have such wide cycle paths.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6ophEYd4A-Q<\/p>\n<p>Alas, Stevenage hasn\u2019t had a decent cycling campaign since the Charley in New Town video was released\u2026<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Reading, United Kingdom<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This town has many odd cycle features, including a 3-foot cycle path in the middle of a pedestrian pathway that literally goes nowhere. But the biggest fail has to go to Reading\u2019s many painted cycle pathways.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2017\/02\/11313_3133313.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-146802\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2017\/02\/11313_3133313.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"810\" height=\"539\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In many parts of Reading, cycle lanes are painted next to parallel parked cars making Reading cyclists unwitting contenders for the door prize.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2017\/02\/33133132313.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-146803\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2017\/02\/33133132313.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"615\" height=\"461\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Although Reading\u2019s council is slowly waking up to the value bikes have in helping to keep traffic moving, many cycle lanes cross in front of residential driveways on pedestrian pathways \u2013 meaning cyclists have to choose between risking the safety of pedestrians with their own safety on the roads.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Every cyclist is filled with a warm glow when their city decides to spend some money building cycle infrastructure.
