Minneapolis<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The North American city is a big ol\u2019 prairie town where the gleaming smiles are as shiny as its sky-scraping skyline and \u2018Minnesota Nice\u2019 is an actual phrase round those parts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2017\/01\/33133113.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-146292\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2017\/01\/33133113.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"850\" height=\"567\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nearly 200 km of painted cycle lanes and 150 km of segregated lanes show just how nice Minnesotans are to their cyclists, and alongside Portland and Washington DC, Minneapolis is leading the great American cycling renaissance.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>9. Dublin<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Irish capital was once much higher up this list as it shares a long history of investing in cycle infrastructure. Its cobbled streets have plenty of places for you to lock your bikes, and cycles are so ubiquitous that in many alleys you could be forgiven for thinking you were in Ghent or Bruges.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_146293\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-146293\" style=\"width: 1800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2017\/01\/profimedia-0301986013.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-146293 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2017\/01\/profimedia-0301986013.jpg\" width=\"1800\" height=\"1012\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-146293\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cycling protest in Dublin (2016)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>7. Bordeaux<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>For a country that\u2019s almost synonymous with cycle love, France has a disappointingly low number of cities in top 10 lists. This is probably because it\u2019s the smaller villages and the sweeping rural roads that attract The Velominati.<\/p>\n<p>Bordeaux does well because their approach to cycling is inclusive \u2013 you\u2019ll see just as many women as men on bikes, and the diversity of cyclists means you\u2019re just as likely to see cruisers or town bikes as you are a Tour de France racer.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>6. Malm\u00f6<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Sweden\u2019s third city has Hanseatic town squares interspersed with edgy modern attractions, not to mention a bridge that connects it to none other than Copenhagen.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_146294\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-146294\" style=\"width: 1250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2017\/01\/profimedia-0306237550.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-146294\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2017\/01\/profimedia-0306237550.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1250\" height=\"831\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-146294\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bicycles parked near canal in Malm\u00f6.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The train station bike parking is beautiful enough to make Copenhagen blush, and they made a success of their ground-breaking No Ridiculous Car Trips. Where other Swedish cities struggle to get the helmet question right, Malm\u00f6 have succeeded.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>5. Strasbourg<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The medieval past is fast becoming a vision of the future, although the success is a long time in the making. Cycling is the quickest way to get about the narrow streets, and there are a staggering 536 km of cycle routes. Read that last sentence again. 536 km.<\/p>\n<p>The Alsatian city has plenty for the cyclist to see, from its winstubs taverns to its Gothic cathedral, the best place to see Strasbourg from is a bicycle.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>4. Eindhoven<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s got that roundabout and it\u2019s Dutch, so its unsurprising that Eindhoven ranks high in the top 10 list. Utrecht<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The 13th century warehouses are sunken below the upper canals, and Hanseatic cobbled roads are everywhere \u2013 and yet despite this so are cyclists. The city planners are almost maniacal in the scale of their cycling ambitions.<\/p>\n<p>Utrecht is currently building the world\u2019s biggest bike parking facility and even though it\u2019s for 12,500 bicycles, some are worried it may not be enough.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>2. Amsterdam<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Tulips, houseboats, bike bells in Prinsengracht, it\u2019s no surprise that Amsterdam is in the top 2. But for now, Amsterdam loves cycling.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>1. Copenhagen<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Peak Nordic means peak cycling. Everyone in Copenhagen seems content and laid back, and it\u2019s probably because everyone cycles everywhere. The result is better quality of journeys for other road users as well, thought out cycle paths easing congestion throughout the city.
