\u201cBike thieves \u2013 humiliate them whenever possible\u201d should be every unfortunate bike owner\u2019s life motto. They make our lives harder and our bikes disappear. Two San Franciscan designers put their heads together and came up with a very specific type of a deterrent bike protection.<\/strong>

The Indiegogo campaign<\/a>, through which the SkunkLock is being crowdfunded, describes the device as \u201cthe only lock that fights back\u201d. The designers do not claim their lock is the ultimate bike theft solution but it might make thieves think twice about stealing your precious two-wheeled companion after being covered in layers of their own puke. Yes, that is what the inventors promise will happen.<\/p>\n

It all started when Daniel Idzkowsky friend\u2019s expensive e-bike was stolen outside a restaurant where he stopped just to have a lunch and chat. Idzkowsky, co-inventor of the lock, was outraged by the inability of two locks, each $120, to stop the thief and he made an angry inquiry as to \u201cwhy didn\u2019t it blow his balls off?\u201d He then came up with a more legal and less limb-tearing invention \u2013 with his co-inventor, Yves Perrenoud, he created a U-shaped lock of carbon and steel with a hollow chamber to hold up to three kinds of gas of their own concoction, including one called \u201cformula D_1\u201d. When someone cuts about 30% of the way into the lock the gas should erupt in the direction of the cut. \u201cIt\u2019s pretty much immediately vomit inducing, causes difficulty breathing,\u201d Idzkowski said. \u201cA lot of similar symptoms to pepper spray.\u201d Way to turn sticky fingers into stinky fingers. With bike theft being rampant in San Francisco and the Bay Area, the lock became a hit and people pledged more than a double of the flexible goal on Indiegogo so far. The inventors also had their smelly gases tested (no pun intended) and their variants were designed to be compliant according to the varying rules of 50 states, major cities and, EU nations.<\/p>\n
