To avoid looking like a skunk, get some mudguards.<\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><strong>The quick fix<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>There are plenty of reasons not to have mudguards. Even in dreary England, it doesn\u2019t rain most of the time, so why ruin the aesthetic of your bike and pay for the privilege? When needed, you fold it out so that it keeps the worst of the wet off your backside. It doesn\u2019t offer the cyclist behind you any protection, and you\u2019ll still get spray from your front wheel, but at least you\u2019ll have a dry rear when you reach the office.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Front and rear damage limitation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A front and rear set will protect more than your bum \u2013 your front wheel will spray water and corrosive minerals onto the underside of your bike and onto your chain and gears. The Crud Racepack is the classic mountain bike solution \u2013 quick, easy to fix, and the practical aesthetic has many imitators.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-143613\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2016\/11\/Racepac-29ER_.jpg\" alt=\"racepac-29er_\" width=\"1000\" height=\"649\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The other advantage of this type of guard is how quickly they can be removed when the sun is shining, which explains why their popularity extends beyond mountain bikes. You\u2019ll often spot these on fixies and the occasional road bike. Nothing wrong with that.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Comprehensive protection<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As a road bike enthusiast, I think I\u2019m entitled to say this \u2013 we\u2019re a bit vain\u2026 or at least a bit obsessive when it comes to keeping our bike pristine, and our clothes as mud-free as possible. If you want to ride comfortably in the rain, accept no substitute. My advice \u2013 given that parts of your bike may be carbon fibre, and road bike design is being pushed to the limits, get your local bike shop to fit the guards for you.
