Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur \u2026 that\u2019s Icelandic for \u201charbor fjord\u201d and Iceland\u2019s third largest city with 27,000 inhabitants!<\/strong><\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the place where I got on my bicycle 4 weeks ago, butterflies tickling my stumac. That\u2019s where I arrived two days ago to complete my one month in Iceland by writing a blogpost and organizing my stuff for the flight to Alaska.<\/p>\n<p>I cycled a lot, these 4 weeks. I hoped that, after cycling a 300km \u2018loop\u2019, the road through the interior would be open.<\/p>\n<p>In Akureyri I heard to good news! The Kj\u00f6lur, or F35, got reopened. Akureyri as a destination was kind of a disillusion, but at least I could stock up on food in budgetsupermarket B\u00d2NUS.<\/p>\n<p>Heading back west on road 1 I crossed beautiful landscapes!<\/p>\n<p>I fancied myself in Kyrgyzstan while cycling along a green fringed river in between brown mountains with a patch of snow here and there. A feeling of nostalgia surprised me. Central Asia touched me in a way not many places did.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>THE INTERIOR<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>\u2018Why do it the easy way if you can do it the hard way\u2019<\/strong> I must\u2019ve thought while in Varmahl\u00ed\u00f0. And so I decided to take a \u2018shortcut\u2019 over a tiny road towards the F35 I so longed for, instead of following road 1 till the turn to the Kj\u00f6lur.<\/p>\n<p>From the moment I left the village it was absolutely quiet. That full day I only saw 4 vehicles. So peaceful, so spacious, so rugged. I slowly bounced over the rocks scattered in loose sand that made the road while climbing to 620m. The \u2018top\u2019 was nicely marked with a gate. Give me endless plains with a distant mountaintop or the promise of a lake, and I\u2019m in my element.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of <em>day 1<\/em> in the interior a very strong east wind picked up. That wind would keep blowing all night and still be there the next day to torment me with all it\u2019s might. Right from the side. It made it impossible for me to move more than 6 or 8 meters before being forced to get off the bike and drag it out of the deep gravel on the side of the \u2018road\u2019. A geothermal area with hotsprings. Some civilization\u2026<\/p>\n<p>The first building I saw was the \u2018visitorscentre\u2019 of a waterfall named Gulfoss. A full parking lot next to it.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_141683\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-141683\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-141683\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2016\/06\/P6220609-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Gulfoss\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-141683\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gulfoss<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_141684\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-141684\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-141684\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2016\/06\/P6220615-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Geysir\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-141684\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Geysir<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Gulfoss is part of the <em>\u2018Golden Circle\u2019<\/em>; three touristic highlights in the south of Iceland you have to \u2018do\u2019. For the majority of the tourists this (and Reykjavik), is their main reason to visit Iceland and pretty much all they\u2019ll see of the island.<\/p>\n<p>Looking through my eyelashes in the visitorscentre I fancied myself in China.<\/p>\n<p>9km down the road you find Geysir, a geothermal area with the active geyser Strokkur that erupts every 4 to 8 minutes. Together with the other tourists I watched from behind a line how the hot water, out of nothing, blew 30 meters up in the air.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t complete the <em>\u2018Golden Circle\u2019<\/em> by visiting National Park Thingvellir, but continued my way south.<\/p>\n<p>(I still hope that nonetheless they will let me leave the country tomorrow..)<\/p>\n<h3><strong>HIGHLIGHTS<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Some friends I texted about my visit to these \u2018highlights\u2019 replied excited. \u2018SO?? What did you think of it?\u2019, \u2018Impressive, right?\u2019, \u2018Wow, I\u2019d love to see that!\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>I stood and watched\u2026<\/p>\n<p>It made me\u00a0wonder. Why doesn\u2019t this enormous waterfall Gulfoss touch me?<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve seen over a hundered waterfalls here on Iceland, but none of them compare to Gulfoss in size and power.<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t new to me. It\u2019s been the same on all of my travels.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Is there some beautiful nature to see?\u2028<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Write about it in Lonely Planet, print a flyer, put a fence around it and signpost the route, start a touristic shuttlebusservice to it\u2026 and it won\u2019t touch me anymore.<\/p>\n<p>Either combination of just two of the given will be sufficient.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019d think that it has something to do with my opinion about it. That it wouldn\u2019t be as special. That it has to be pristine. Or that I judge the tourists who \u2018do\u2019 the Golden Circle in half a day on a organized tour.<\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s not it\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Even when the umpteenth bus of Chinese, armed with mouth masks, jungle hats, cameras and selfiesticks, arrives, I don\u2019t feel irritations or judgement welling up in my geyser.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless it\u2019s a fact:<\/p>\n<p><strong>The higher the fence around the sight and the more signposts marking te way, the more difficult it finds its way to my heart.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I can find it special, interesting, impressive or even beautiful\u2026 but it doesn\u2019t touch me.<\/p>\n<p>Something to chew on for a while, until I reach the right analysis.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_141686\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-141686\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-141686\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2016\/06\/P6240643-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Last stop on Iceland\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-141686\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Last stop on Iceland<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_141687\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-141687\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-141687\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2016\/06\/P6240646-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"with moss everywhere\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-141687\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">with moss everywhere<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Almost at the end of my trip here on Iceland I pitched my tent in the rain behind a shed, sheltered from the wind, with the permission of a present farmer. Just when I started cooking a woman came by to invite me to her home to have a shower and spend the night. I hesitated.. I just put up my tent\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>Though, when I got inside to \u2018just have a shower\u2019 the bed was very tempting and I decided to spend the night. The next morning, we had breakfast together and went on a little roadtrip. We visited a flowervillage and drove along the coast in the campervan with my bike attached on the back. Once they dropped me and we said goodbye, I only had a short but beautiful ride left to Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur.<\/p>\n<p>How nice to be a guest with an Icelandic couple, just before the end of my time here. It felt warm like \u2018Ukrainian hospitality\u2019 to me.. Great pie!!<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>REVIEW<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>So here I am, looking back on one month in Iceland.<\/p>\n<p>What I think about this country?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a beautiful country. The nature is diverse and often fairylike. Peace, space, ruggedness are to be found around every corner. I\u2019m very glad I went here!<\/p>\n<p>Still, something inside me balks. This was indeed a beautiful country to <strong>see<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>But I feel a very clear difference with the countries that we beautiful to<strong> be<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Being here and experiencing that difference makes it even clearer in which countries I left a piece of myself and at that the same time found their way into my heart.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_141682\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-141682\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-141682\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2016\/06\/P6210580-1024x481.jpg\" alt=\"Come on Alaska!\" width=\"800\" height=\"376\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-141682\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Come on Alaska!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And that\u2019s how I learn while on the road.
