But how about looking for examples in the Eastern part of the continent? It seems the people there still haven&#8217;t fully recovered from the earlier decades of starvation for motor vehicles.<\/strong><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But as Easterners are increasingly experiencing traffic congestion and other downsides of the car hype, the first rays of green traffic light are reaching their cities.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> As so<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> often in<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> recent history,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Hungary is one of<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the first countries to open for new trends. Earlier this autumn, its capital city Budapest started an ambitious municipal bike<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sharing and rental network<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> cost 3 million<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> e<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">uro. Roughly four fifths of the expenses were<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> financed<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the EU<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> f<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">u<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">nds, the rest was paid by the local<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2016\/02\/1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-136601\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2016\/02\/1-600x338.jpg\" alt=\"When thinking about bike-friendly cities in Europe, the names that first come to mind are all in the old West, with the usual suspects being Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Berlin and, more recently, Paris and Seville. There is a total of over 1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">100 city bikes distributed at rental stands all over the city, with more than 2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">000 docking stations, all powered<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> solar energy from local panels, and 98\u00a0collecting points serving clients 24\/7.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2016\/02\/140331_bubi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-136602\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2016\/02\/140331_bubi-600x338.jpg\" alt=\"But as Easterners are increasingly experiencing traffic congestion and other downsides of the car hype, the first rays of green traffic light are reaching their cities. As so often in the recent history, Hungary is one of the first countries to open for new trends.\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The so<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ph<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">isticated software running the BuBi was developed<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> nextbike GmbH from Germany, while the bikes are Hu<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ng<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">arian<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">built Csepels. The traditional local bike manufacturer also operat<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">es<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the system, in cooperation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> T-Systems. As to the maintenance and managing costs, these are covered by the Hungarian MOL oil and gas group, hence the full official name MOL BuBi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The network is so dense, that the longest distance between two docking<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is less than 20 minutes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> pedalling. Giv<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">en<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the generous Bubi pricing policy, clients can virtually cycle the city for free \u2013 you only pay after the first 30 minutes of rental (e.g. EUR 1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">60 per hour), after<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> making<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> a deposit of<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> ca.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> EUR 80 to be refunded<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> upon<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> returning the bike. While most tourists and visitors would opt for the shor<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">-term rentals, locals prefer buying passes.
