Cycling has been slow to welcome women, meaning there are still trials and tribulations for the everyday rider to overcome. From sizing and styling issues, to mechanical and riding comments, here are 10 things female cyclists hate to hear.<\/strong>
\n<\/p>\n

\"\u201cThat\u2019s<\/a><\/h3>\n

1. \u201cThat\u2019s the smallest size\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The dark ages are gone, women\u2019s professional cycling is taking off and yet still some brands do not make clothes, shoes or bike frames small enough to accommodate all women. How distressing to see the bike of your dreams, and find out you can never ride it.<\/p>\n

2. \u201cWe\u2019ll wait for you at the top\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Okay, in some groups some women might be relieved to hear this at the bottom of a climb. But in others it\u2019s hugely patronizing and suggests no woman could ever pass a man on an incline. Think about it before you say it next time \u2013 not everyone takes it in a jest.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

3. \u201cWe only take cash\u201d <\/strong><\/h3>\n

This isn\u2019t actually restricted to female cyclists, but it\u2019s very annoying turning up a caf\u00e9 stop with your neat cardholder and finding out they don\u2019t take cards!<\/p>\n

\"\u201cWe<\/a><\/p>\n

4. \u201cThere aren\u2019t any showers in this office\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Men generally don\u2019t seem to mind cycling to work and splashing their face in the toilet sink, but not ladies. So when you start a new job and find out not only is it nowhere near the gym and its showers, but it\u2019s also without its own shower, thoughts arise of years being the smelly girl in the corner.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

5. \u201cShall I put a triple on?\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Assuming that a female couldn\u2019t manage to ride a bike without three chainrings is carte blanche for a female to punch you in the face.<\/p>\n

Plenty of women are strong enough to ride bigger gears than any men.<\/p>\n

6. \u201cThat\u2019s the only colour it comes in\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n

With men\u2019s sizes often just not quite right for a female cyclist\u2019s body, many brands have come up with women\u2019s specific cycle clothing ranges. However, much of their design work has gone not into fit, but colours. The old \u2018pink-it-and-shrink-it\u2019 tactic remains and that slick black jersey your male cycling partner was wearing last week? It only comes in neon purple in women\u2019s sizes.<\/p>\n

7. \u201cGood girl\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n

It\u2019s as common as hello, or rather goodbye, as this is the well-practiced parting comment from a man passing a female cyclist on a climb.<\/p>\n

\"\u201cGood<\/a><\/p>\n

8.\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cCycling will give you big thighs\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n

First of all, we know! Secondly, so what? They\u2019ll be big, hard, powerful thighs that can take us anywhere we want on our shiny bicycles.<\/p>\n

9. \u201cNice arse\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Don\u2019t be that person who shouts \u2018nice arse\u2019 out of the window as you drive by a female cyclist. Nine times out of 10, it isn\u2019t appreciated.<\/p>\n

10. \u201cIs that a motor in your bottom bracket?\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Okay, that\u2019s not something women cyclists ever hear, but after Belgian under-23 racer Femke Van den Driessche was found to have a hidden motor in her bike at the Cyclocross World Championships last month, they just might start!<\/p>\n
