However, perhaps there are some extreme bike expeditions that have inspired you to embark on your journey.\u00a0 Here are six examples that I find inspirational.<\/strong><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>1897: African American \u201cBuffalo Soldiers\u201d and their 3,058 km expedition<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2016\/02\/kORgskA.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-133436\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2016\/02\/kORgskA-600x441.jpg\" alt=\"In 1897, they set out on an expedition to test how useful bicycles could be to the military in mountainous areas, traveling across the country all the way from Fort Missoula to St. Louis, Missouri, a trip that covered 3,058 miles and took 34 days.\" width=\"600\" height=\"441\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Just as bicycles were becoming popular in North America and Europe, the 25<sup>th<\/sup> United States Infantry Bicycle Corps was formed in Fort Missoula, Montana. The regiment was made up of African-American men in the army known as \u201cBuffalo Soldiers\u201d at that time. In 1897, they set out on an expedition to test how useful bicycles could be to the military in mountainous areas, traveling across the country all the way from Fort Missoula to St. Louis, Missouri, a trip that covered 3,058 miles and took 34 days.\u00a0 This journey is even more awe inspiring when we remember the simple bicycles of those days and the availability and conditions of roads and trails at that time.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>1939: Tommy Godwin, World Endurance record holder for distance in calendar year from 1939 until 2015<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2016\/02\/tommy-godwin-wreath.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-133434\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2016\/02\/tommy-godwin-wreath.jpg\" alt=\"Tommy Goodwin was the World Endurance record holder for distance in calendar years for decades, from 1939 until 2015, when Kurt Searvogel made a new record.\" width=\"460\" height=\"570\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tommy Goodwin was the World Endurance record holder for distance in calendar years for decades, from 1939 until 2015, when Kurt Searvogel made a new record.\u00a0 He rode 120,805\u00a0km in a year, which translates to an average of 330 km per day, on a bicycle that weighted more than 14 kg.\u00a0 Not only did he maintain his vegetarian diet, he also continued riding through primarily England even through blackouts after the World War II came.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t stop there though \u2013 he kept riding after securing his record and, after a total of 500 days, gained the 160,000 km record as well.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>1995-1996: G\u00f6ran Kropp\u2019s journey from Stockhom to Mount Everest<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2016\/02\/goran-kropp-660.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-133435\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2016\/02\/goran-kropp-660.jpg\" alt=\"On October 16, 1995, G\u00f6ran Kropp set out from Stockholm with 108 kg of gear and food and then cycled 13,000 km to Everest Base Camp.
