Two years ago, he co-sponsored a bill that would have all riders banned from state highways. That law understandably failed but the Republican didn\u2019t give up and now he\u2019s back with a sneakier attempt.<\/strong><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The state legislator wants all bicycles, if riding on a lettered county road, which is the American equivalent of a B road, to fly an orange fluorescent flag at least 15-foot-high.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5\"><strong><strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cMy constituents, who drive these roads daily, feel this is a good idea. It protects automobile drivers, as well as bicyclists. I believe in freedom and this bill in no way restricts your freedom to ride on the roads. Plus 15 feet is less than the clearance for bridges and underpasses and if you would by some miracle avoid these obstacles you might be electrocuted by utility lines<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> which happen to be even lower.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe bill is couched in language of safety and reasonableness, but in reality it will not help the safety situation for bicyclists or drivers, will be impossible to enforce and comply with, and is intended as another backhanded way to keep cyclists off the road,\u201d says the Missouri Bicycle and Pedestrian Federation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> which is one of the organizations protesting against this bill.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2016\/01\/orange-flying-flag-5760x3840_21966.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-133073\" src=\"https:\/\/d2p6e6u75xmxt8.cloudfront.net\/2\/2016\/01\/orange-flying-flag-5760x3840_21966-600x399.jpg\" alt=\"Jay Houghton is a Missouri state legislator who really doesn\u2019t want cyclists on public roads.\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It just so happens that <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jaydhoughton\" target=\"_blank\">Jay Houghton is on Twitter<\/a> and as he claims on his profile: \u201cHe is working for the people of Missouri\u201d.
