Wout van Aert’s participation in the Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a came to an unexpected end after a severe crash on a damp descent during stage 16. Van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike), who had been a dominant presence in the race, lost control on a moist, left-hand bend while descending the day’s penultimate climb to Lagos de Covadonga. He collided with the rocky roadside, leading to significant injuries.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Belgian pro, age 29, suffered deep cuts on his right elbow and knee, which were visibly bleeding as he received medical attention in his team car. Despite an initial attempt to persevere, he was forced to withdraw from the race. The incident was part of a broader pattern of falls affecting multiple riders due to the slick road conditions.<\/p>\n

Visma-Lease a Bike’s\u00a0Sports director Grischa Niermann said: \u201cWout was taken to hospital by ambulance. There he will undergo examinations. Of course we are so sad seeing him leave the Vuelta<\/a> in this manner. Luck has not been on our side this season. We all feel for him.\u201d<\/p>\n
