Til sammenligning har Kina 149 sykler per promille, og Nederland har ikke mindre enn 23 millioner sykler for befolkningen p\u00e5 17 millioner.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>En <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teriin.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2019-01\/Benefits%20of%20Cycling%20in%20India%20-%20Report.pdf\">rapport fra Energy and Resources Institute i 2018<\/a> konkluderte med at denne relativt lave bruken av sykkelen i India skader landets \u00f8konomi og befolkningens helse og velstand.<\/p>\n<p>Rapporten siterer en Bloomberg-studie, som fant at husholdninger i middelklassen i India bruker ikke mindre enn 73% av deres daglige inntekt for \u00e5 kj\u00f8pe en gallon (3,76 l) bensin til sine to- og firehjuls motoriserte kj\u00f8ret\u00f8y. Dette gjelder spesielt i reduksjon av ikke-smittsomme sykdommer (NCD), som diabetes og hjerte- og karsykdommer (CVD). NCD-er generelt ansvarlig for 60% av d\u00f8dsfallene i India, og CVD-er og diabetes for\u00e5rsaker henholdsvis 44% og 3% av disse d\u00f8delighetene. P\u00e5 grunn av fysisk inaktivitet lider mer enn 63 millioner indianere i dag av diabetes type 2.<\/p>\n<p>Dette skaper en enorm \u00f8konomisk belastning, b\u00e5de for den enkelte og for \u00f8konomien n\u00e5r det gjelder medisinske utgifter og tapt produktivitet. World Economic Forum og Harvard School of Public Health har ansl\u00e5tt at India vil p\u00e5dra seg et \u00f8konomisk tap p\u00e5 4,58 billioner dollar (4,13 billioner euro) for perioden 2012\u20132030 p\u00e5 grunn av utbredelsen av NCD-er.<\/p>\n<p>Ikke alle i India eier et motorisert kj\u00f8ret\u00f8y. En tredjedel av landets arbeidskraft g\u00e5r til jobben. Rundt 31% av disse menneskene foretar en gjennomsnittlig tur til fots p\u00e5 3,5 km, mens dr\u00f8yt en fjerdedel g\u00e5r i gjennomsnitt 8 km for \u00e5 komme seg til arbeidsstedet.
