Er waren geen voedingsdeskundigen, geen teammanagers en zelfs geen teamgenoten die je konden helpen! Wielrenners moesten hun eigen boontjes doppen. Daarom waren zaken als roken om de longen \u2018te openen\u2019, de vochthuishouding op peil houden met bier of elke dag elf liter warme chocolademelk drinken niet ongewoon. Laten we de voeding van wielrenners vroeger eens vergelijken met die van tegenwoordig.<\/strong><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: windowtext;\">Eet alles wat je onderweg tegenkomt<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\">De Tour de France had in de vroege jaren 1900 bijvoorbeeld geen speciale eetstops of verzorgingsteams. Rijders stopten gewoon langs de weg om met hulp van buitenaf bij te tanken, iets waarvoor je vandaag de dag zou worden gediskwalificeerd! En de dingen die ze aten waren ook heel verschillend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BNefQQ9BeCh\/<\/p>\n<p>De winnaar van de Tour de France 1904, Henri Cornet, dronk elf liter warme chocolademelk, vier liter thee, champagne en at anderhalve kilo rijstepap per dag volgens het boek <em>The Science of the Tour de France: Training Secrets of the World\u2019s Best Cyclists<\/em>. Deze aantallen lijken tegenwoordig wellicht absurd, maar de hedendaagse vijf uur durende Tour de France-etappes zijn niets vergeleken met de 18 uur per dag in het zadel die wielrenners in de vroege jaren 1900 moesten doorstaan.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BKpwLYlDnWN\/<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: windowtext;\">Sigaretten om de longen te openen<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\">Rond 1920 rookten wielrenners ook sigaretten tijdens het rijden, in het bijzonder voorafgaand aan steile beklimmingen, omdat ze hoopten dat dit hun longen zou openen. Of dat ook enig effect had, daar kunnen we alleen maar naar gissen. Hoe dan ook, deze gewoonte verdween geleidelijk doordat onderzoek de werkelijke gezondheidseffecten van roken aan het licht bracht.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BIZVGHqj_Eb\/<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: windowtext;\">Alcohol voor meer fun onderweg<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\">Tot in de jaren zestig was het gebruikelijk om alcohol te drinken tijdens het wielrennen. Rijders dronken verschillende dranken, vari\u00ebrend van bier tot wijn en champagne, zowel om hun vochthuishouding op peil te houden als, naar verluidt, om onderweg simpelweg meer plezier te hebben. En hoewel \u00e9\u00e9n biertje niet schadelijk zal zijn voor je vochthuishouding, weten we inmiddels dat er veel effectievere manieren zijn om te hydrateren. Maar wat betreft het fun-aspect, als wielrenners tegenwoordig ook weer etappes moesten rijden van 18 uur, wie weet, misschien zou alcohol dan weer in trek raken.<br \/>\nDe huidige wielrenvoeding heeft een lange weg afgelegd, maar het is goed om terug te blikken om dit ten volle te waarderen.
