Sunweb-renner Dumoulin hoopt op een herhaling van 2017. Net als toen wil hij dit seizoen de roze trui winnen. En hoewel hij niet erg blij is met het voorgestelde parcours van de Tour de France, keert hij ook daar terug.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cHet parcours van de Tour werd bekendgemaakt toen ik op huwelijksreis was en midden in de bergen van Nepal zat. Ik zat met m\u2019n vrouw in een cabine op 3.000 meter hoogte. Toen we weer verbinding met Wi-Fi hadden, keek ik even op m\u2019n telefoon. Ik was toen ietwat teleurgesteld over het parcours.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Het moet een behoorlijke tegenvaller zijn geweest voor de Nederlander. Dumoulin geeft namelijk aan dat algemeen manager Iwan Spekenbrink van Sunweb en hijzelf al hun zinnen op de Tour hadden gezet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNa de presentatie van de Tour begon ik te twijfelen of de Tour wel h\u00e9t doel moest zijn. Ik schreef (naar Spekenbrink, red.): \u2018Voordat je een besluit neemt, moeten we praten.\u2019 Het team heeft uiteindelijk de knoop doorgehakt. Het was een moeilijke keuze, omdat ik weet dat er niet heel veel jaren resten om de Tour te kunnen winnen. Maar 2019 is gewoon geen goed jaar om alles op de Tour te zetten.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

De Giro is meer op het lijf geschreven van Dumoulin, aangezien daar 58,5 tijdritkilometers in zitten, verdeeld over drie individuele tijdritten. De Tour heeft 54 tijdritkilometers, maar de helft daarvan wordt afgelegd tijdens een ploegentijdrit. Chris Froome keert dit jaar niet terug naar Itali\u00eb, maar desalniettemin is de concurrentie ongekend groot. Vincenzo Nibali, Simon Yates, Primo\u017e Rogli\u010d en Egan Bernal zijn enkele van de grote namen. De 28-jarige Dumoulin kijkt er naar uit om de strijd met hen aan te gaan.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIk zie het plan erg zitten om van de Giro weer mijn hoofddoel te maken, omdat ik denk dat dat de grote ronde is die me het beste ligt.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hij geeft echter toe dat hij hoopt ooit te kunnen juichen in Parijs.<\/p>\n

\u201cZeker na afgelopen jaar heb ik gevoeld dat ik echt heel graag een keer de Tour de France wil winnen. Dat zou het ultieme zijn en ik weet nu ook dat die droom waarheid kan worden.
