It\u2019s almost here! Arguably one of the greatest and most beautiful race routes in the country \u2013 The Ring of Kerry Cycle. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Taking place July 6, the historic race will see up to 8,000 cyclists tackle one of the toughest but most visually stunning\u00a0cycle routes in the country.<\/p>\n

An even better feature of this long-standing cycle\u00a0is that that the\u00a0proceeds from the event are donated to six chosen charities. Over \u20ac1.2 million was raised in 2018 from the event and it is important to note this event could not take place without the support of local volunteers and support from the local \u0160koda dealer: Liam Lynch Motors<\/a>.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re doing the cycle, of course you\u2019ll already know all of this stuff . If it\u2019s one last push you\u2019re seeking to register \u2013 DO IT \u2013 the final deadline for entries is June 10. It\u2019s a charity event and not a\u00a0race!\u00a0 The event organisers are quite particular about this being a\u00a0charity event and definitely\u00a0not a race<\/span>. Don’t be surprised to get a dressing down from marshals on the route\u00a0if you\u00a0appear to be\u00a0racing, taking corners at speed or acting in an unsafe manner.<\/p>\n

Once all the places are booked or sold out \u2013 there\u2019ll be no more online positions available.\u00a0 If you decide late you want to do the\u00a0event \u2013 you can apply to be added to a waiting list and if any cancellations arise\u00a0 you\u2019ll be on the list.<\/p>\n

Info about the\u00a0cycle itself <\/strong><\/p>\n

So, as you\u2019ll know, it\u2019s a Saturday morning \u2013 here\u2019s hoping in advance for a GLORIOUS July morning. The official\u00a0event start is 7.30am \u2013 but you\u2019ll find that\u00a0quite a lot of cyclists will head off for as early as 6am \u2013 the time you start is largely up to yourself \u2013as long as you have a pretty good estimate of the time it will take you to complete the cycle.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re in doubt, it might be best just to give yourself a bit of wiggle room for any mishaps\/punctures etc. Quite a lot of cyclists like to stop along the route for selfies and the odd pint so\u00a0an earlier start time is advised to get back before darkness.<\/p>\n

If you are starting really early, it\u2019s just worth noting that you won\u2019t have back up services or the imposed race traffic restrictions until the official start time.<\/p>\n

The event support systems in place for the cycle will be stepping down at 8pm that night so just keep this in mind \u2013 you will probably be home in bed with the tae at that stage but you know, just in case!<\/p>\n

We\u2019re here for the food <\/strong><\/p>\n

Given the massive distance (175km in case you forgot) it\u2019s advisable to bring your own food and snacks\/gels\/ fuel of choice with you- but there will also be allocated food stops along the route.<\/p>\n

The first one will be located in Caherciveen at the 72 kilometre mark, and then there\u2019ll be another one just as you\u2019re really starting to tire at around the 135km mark \u2013 the good news there is you\u2019re nearly there at that stage!<\/p>\n

There will also be food and refreshments at the finish line so you can fill up on cake and sandwiches to your hearts content \u2013 you\u2019ll need it after tackling one of the toughest climbs in Ireland.<\/p>\n

As a last thing in terms of food \u2013 just do what you normally do \u2013 if you normally snack often \u2013 do that, but if you\u2019re the type that likes to eat larger meals less frequently \u2013 do that as well \u2013 don\u2019t try to fix what\u2019s not broken!<\/p>\n

Medical centres <\/strong><\/p>\n

There will be 3 Fixed Medical centres during the race and it\u2019s definitely worth making a note of these pre race.
\n\u2022 Killarney at the Start\/Finish Points
\n\u2022 Caherciveen (72Kms)
\n\u2022 Kenmare (136Kms)<\/p>\n

There will also be numerous Fixed First Aid stations manned by qualified personnel along the route which will be signposted in advance of their position \u2013 so keep an eye out.<\/p>\n

If you experience a medical emergency, you can phone the Medical Helpline number which is on your bike tag.<\/p>\n

If the absolute worst happens and you can\u2019t finish the\u00a0cycle \u2013 you can and are expected to avail of one of the sweeps who will transport you and your bike back to Killarney.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s good news if you\u2019re feeling a bit battered and weather-beaten at the finish line \u2013 as there will also be a physiotherapist on hand thanks to Liam Lynch \u0160koda\u00a0for any niggles or strains should you pick them up along the way.<\/p>\n

The last thing we will say overall is to ENJOY every minute of the cycle, lap up the atmosphere and take in some of the most beautiful views that Ireland \u2013 not just Kerry \u2013 has to offer.<\/strong><\/p>\n
