This September, a remarkable group of 17 women from Co. Mayo will embark on one of Ireland’s most iconic cycling challenges: the Mizen to Malin journey.<\/strong> Spanning 605 km, this north-south route takes the cyclists from the rugged coastline of Mizen Head in Cork, the southernmost point of Ireland, all the way to Malin Head in Donegal, the northernmost tip of the isle.<\/p>\n

This incredible endeavour is more than just a test of physical endurance\u2014it’s a powerful statement of community spirit and dedication to two vital causes, the Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation and the Mayo Rape Crisis Centre.<\/p>\n

A vision born from passion<\/strong><\/p>\n

The group, known as Westport Women On Wheels (WOW), is made up of members from the Westport Triathlon Club and Covey Wheelers Cycling Club, in which they have spent months in preparation for this event. Their journey is a testament to what can be achieved when a shared goal unites people with a common passion for cycling and a commitment to making a difference.<\/p>\n

The idea for this all-female cycle came from Colette Sweeney, a seasoned Ironman athlete and a central figure at the Westport Leisure Centre. Colette\u2019s vision was to bring together women from her local community for a challenge that would not only test their physical limits but also serve a greater purpose. “When you\u2019re part of a club and you all come together for a good cause, it brings the entire community together,” she explains.<\/p>\n

Under her leadership, the group has grown into a formidable team, ready to tackle the famous Mizen to Malin route. The challenge has already had a unifying effect on the participants, drawing them closer as they push through the rigorous training regime, often battling the unpredictable Irish weather!<\/p>\n

Training for the challenge of a lifetime<\/strong><\/p>\n

Training for such a demanding event is no small feat. The Westport WOW team has spent countless hours on the roads, navigating the hills and valleys of Mayo, and participating in numerous long-distance cycling events to build up their stamina. These women have cycled through rain, wind, and sun, covering over 40,000 km collectively\u2014a distance that speaks volumes about their dedication and determination.<\/p>\n

Their preparation included participation in several high-profile cycling events across Ireland, which served both as practice and motivation. The team took on the \u0160koda Celtic Cycling Series, the \u0160koda Tour de Conamara (140 km) and the \u0160koda Ring of Clare (160km), as well as the Cunga Ram (115 km) in Galway, the Gran Fondo Sligo (135 km), the Westportif (160 km) and the Ballina Salmon Sportif. (120 km) Each of these events presented its own set of challenges, from steep climbs to long stretches of open road, all of which have contributed to the team’s readiness for the Mizen to Malin journey.<\/p>\n

The strategy behind the ride<\/strong><\/p>\n

The decision to embark on this epic cycle in early September was a strategic one. The group plans to take advantage of the prevailing southerly winds, which are expected to provide a helpful boost as they make their way northward. Every detail of the journey has been meticulously planned, from the route to the daily stages, ensuring that the cyclists are well-prepared for the challenges ahead.<\/p>\n

The journey begins on September 3rd with a relatively short 26 km ride from Mizen Head to Schull in Cork. This initial leg serves as a warm-up before the more demanding days that follow. On September 4th, the cyclists will cover 147 km from Schull to Charleville, navigating through the heart of Cork. The following day, they will tackle the longest stretch of the journey, a 157 km\u00a0 ride from Charleville to Athlone, crossing through the Midlands and into the west. On September 6th, the group will cycle 128 km from Athlone to Enniskillen. The final day, September 7th, will see the women cover 147 km from Enniskillen to Malin Head, completing their epic journey in this beautiful corner of Donegal.<\/p>\n

A cause close to their hearts<\/strong><\/p>\n

While the physical challenge is immense, the motivation behind it is what truly drives these women forward. All funds raised through their efforts will be donated to the Mayo Roscommon Hospice and the Mayo Rape Crisis Centre, two charities that provide essential services to the local community.<\/p>\n

The Mayo Roscommon Hospice<\/a> offers palliative care to those with life-limiting illnesses, ensuring that patients and their families receive the support they need during the most challenging times. Meanwhile, the Mayo Rape Crisis Centre<\/a> provides vital services to survivors of sexual violence, offering counselling and support to help them rebuild their lives.<\/p>\n
