New research suggests that eating those green leafy veggies can have benefits for your cycling leg muscles. Let\u2019s see how much you need to get a benefit.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Researchers from Edith Cowan University <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jn\/advance-article-abstract\/doi\/10.1093\/jn\/nxaa415\/6184158?redirectedFrom=fulltext\">published a study<\/a> in the Journal of Nutrition that evaluates the effects of eating nitrate-rich vegetables, such as leafy greens, on muscle function. They also observed up to 4% faster <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2018\/10\/17\/what-is-better-10000-steps-or-an-hour-of-cycling\/\">walking speeds.<\/a> You can only imagine how much faster the cycling speeds would be if they observed those too.<\/p>\n<p>The study suggests that eating just one cup of leafy green vegetables every day could boost muscle function. Lead researcher Dr Marc Sim said the findings reveal important evidence for the role diet plays in overall health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur study has shown that diets high in nitrate-rich <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2020\/12\/22\/5-diet-tips-that-work-for-everyone-fruits-and-veggies\/\">vegetables<\/a> may bolster your muscle strength independently of any physical activity. We should be eating a variety of vegetables every day, with at least one of those serves being leafy greens to gain a range of positive health benefits for the musculoskeletal and cardiovascular system,\u201d Dr Sim said.<\/p>\n<p>All nitrate-rich vegetables can have this effect, the researchers suggest. If you don\u2019t enjoy dark leafy greens such as spinach or kale, you can also get some beetroot to increase your nitrate intake.<\/p>\n<p>He also recommends veggies above <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2018\/02\/15\/hidden-dangers-multivitamin-supplements\/\">supplements.<\/a> \u201cIt&#8217;s also better to eat nitrate-rich vegetables as part of a healthy diet rather than taking supplements. Some people drink a lot of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovecycling.com\/wide\/2017\/07\/27\/use-beetroot-juice-win-races\/\">beetroot juice<\/a> to improve performance!<\/p>\n<p>But not everyone is after faster cycling times.
