Cyclist Lost His Arm So He 3D Printed a New One

By Martin Mrazek

Tom Wheeler is not your usual cyclist. His love of two wheels goes so far, you might not even be able to imagine it. Despite losing the use of his right arm in a downhill race, he still wants to cycle as much as possible.

„On the 26th March 2011 I took part in what seemed to be an average weekends racing. Little did I know that on this day my life would be changed for ever,“ said Tom about the accident.

Tom Wheeler is a true inspiration.

His cycling career looked very promising at that time and he was riding down the hill as hard as possible. Unfortunately he hit a branch, lost control of his bike and the rest is history.

Despite losing the use of his right arm in a downhill race, he still wants to cycle as much as possible.

He might have lost the use of his arm but his love of cycling made him look for any possible solution that could put him back in the seat. He teamed up with Poppy Farrugia and PDR’s International Centre for Design Research a while back and together they try to create a brace, which would help other cyclists with the same or similar condition to Tom‘s.

The brace could help others in a similar situation to the one Tom is in.

„The brace is always progressing and is nearly at a stage where we can think about a time where we can produce them for others,“ says the official Notbroken website.
